For most of us, Christmas Day is a day that we usually spend with our family and close friends. Often these people close to us are many. The thought of spending time together can throw us into a panic … but we forget, it is a choice that we often make.

In the year my mother passed away I spent the whole Christmas Holidays alone. I did have a couple of invitations from some of my close friends, who were thinking about me not spending Christmas Eve alone, but still I decided to stay by myself. It wasn’t necessarily the best Christmas I have ever had, but it wasn’t the worst Christmas I have ever had either.

If you ever find yourself in a similar situation you’ll be glad to know that there are some things to help make the most of your solitary Christmas day. Here are some advantages I found that will surprise you about spending Christmas alone and still get something useful out of it:

Have a plan
If you plan accordingly you’ll determine how the day is going to go. Do you want to spend it in your pyjama? Do you want to catch up on your favourite tv series on Netflix? While it may be silly, if you have a plan and set a simple goal you’re going to find a way to enjoy your day even more. Even if this is the only day off you get for a while, you can cherish it and enjoy it as a day of celebration … just for yourself.

Remenisce upon your Accomplishments in 2014
Use the day to create your New Year’s Resolutions. You can easily focus on the negative aspects of spending the day alone, so find something more positive to focus on and you’ll find that you’ll be much happier. For example, this year I was really happy that I started dancing Salsa, Bachata and Kizomba, even if that meant to have less time for myself.

By working on my New Years Resolutions I actually made plans that I knew I can keep and which will benefit me for the better. It gave me time to really spend dwelling on the benefits of my resolutions and how I could accomplish them for a great 2015!

Enjoy The Peacefulness
While the holidays are a very joyous time of year, they can also be very stressful. In fact, a lot of people suffer as they have to be around so many people and don’t like that feeling. Maybe you’ve never had to deal with that, but for those of us who do, it’s a great way to treasure peacefulness.

Consider yourself lucky and you’ll be able to focus more on happiness, rather than on negativity. You only have to please yourself and you don’t have to worry about anyone else. The sound of silence can actually be a true gift, if you look at it that way. You can ignore the ads and shopping and focus on taking a nice and peaceful break. You’ll be amazed at how life changing this day can be for you, if you allow it to be so. You don’t have to feel guilty for wanting to be alone. You can turn down invitations from well meaning friends and you can release yourself to enjoy the day on your own terms.

Just do it!

Spending your Christmas day alone isn’t a punishment. It’s not like being in jail. Instead, it’s got many great advantages that you can focus on and you’ll appreciate it more when you seek it out as such.

Either way, no matter how you spend your Christmas day, you can allow love and thankfulness to permeate your life. Best of all, you can do that all on your own without anyone else having to intervene to make it happen.

A Merry Christmas to you!!
